With the whole Brazilian crowd against him, Cannonier walked into the octagon confident of making a big statement. “The Killa Gorilla” deployed leg kicks to get Silva’s attention in the opening minutes of the round. Silva as usual took time to open up but in the process ate a lot of leg kicks and punches. As the fight was nearing the end of first round, Cannonier landed a hard inside leg kick that just buckled Silva’s right knee. Silva dropped immediately wincing in pain and there was no follow up punches required from Cannonier’s side.
In his post fight interview, Silva said “I’m sorry, guys in training, my knee was already a little bit bad, and I took a kick to it, and I just couldn’t hold up. I’m really sorry.”
“I really appreciate the opportunity to step in here. He didn’t have to fight me. He could’ve fought anybody he wanted to…so I want to show my appreciation and my respect for him. But the crowd is a different story. They don’t respect me, and I ain’t got not respect for them. That’s just it.” Cannonier said.
