UFC 241 ‘Cormier vs. Miocic 2’ - Play by Play Updates & LIVE Results -

After winning a contract with Dana White’s Contender Series, Ian Heinisch rolled into the UFC with two straight wins over Cezar Ferreira, Antonio Carlos Jr. and managed to crack the top-15 rankings in just one year. The former LFA middle weight champion went on to call out fellow wrestler Brunson after his embarrassing loss to Israel Adesanya. The #8 ranked UFC veteran, Brunson wasted no time and accepted the challenge from the lesser ranked Heinisch.

Speaking about the match up Brunson said “He’s like 5-foot-11, 6-foot-tall at best, 71- or 72-inch reach. I’ve got a 78-inch reach. He’s a wrestler per se, I’ve never been taken down in a fight. I take everybody down. I’ve got guys that I wrestle with everyday that I know are better than him. So for him to feel like he has the better wrestling, I’m like OK that’s another challenge.”

But Brunson had to survive the initial storm Heinisch brought in the opening seconds of the first round as he landed a massive head kick that stunned Brunson. But the UFC veteran managed to stay in the fight as he clinched Heinisch and looked to take him down. Brunson recovered and slowly began to settle in the fight as he found his rhythm and timing with his punches. Brunson’s experience came into play from the second round as he began landing strikes with precision and weathered Heinisch down who started to show sign of slowing down. None of Heinisch’s take down attempts materialized but Brunson made him pay with his two beautifully timed ones. Exhausted and worn out, Heinisch continued to press forward but kept on eating accurate punches from Brunson who secured both the second and third round to his name. Ian Heinisch’s attempts could not get him the W and he snapped his five fight win streak and tastes defeat for the first time in his career. With this win, Brunson picked up his second win of the year and his eleventh UFC win.

With his very first UFC pay-per-view opportunity coming his way after winning two of his his first UFC fights, Sodiq Yusuff clearly made a big impression with his performance tonight. Yusuff landed a flurry that left a cut opened on the side of Benitez’s left eye early in the first round. But the Nigerian born featherweight got clipped with a counter punch from Benitez midway, but he managed to stick and turn the tide in his favour. Yusuff switched his game plan and became more cautious, landing well timed punches. He continued to march ahead and bring in the heat as he repeatedly hit Benitez with his slick combos.

With less than a minute remaining in the first round as Benitez pushed forward, threw a jab that Yusuff ate and countered with a devastating right hand Sending Benitez crashing to the mat. Yusuff followed up with a few more punches and hammer fists before the referee had to step in and stop the fight at 4:14 secs.

The TKO victory moves Yusuff to 10-1 in his career with a perfect 3-0 resume thus far in his young UFC career. He considered it an honor to fight on the UFC 241 main card, and with those kinds of performances, Yusuff will likely find himself in a similar spot again in the future.

Following his third straight win, Yusuff said “It’s a blessing to fight on this card, I’m Nigerian baby, I’m built for struggle. This is what we do.

Paulo Costa defeated Yoel Romero via Unanimous Decision

Two physically intimidating middle weights stepped into the octagon tonight and turned the match up into an classic that could very well be the fight of the night and a fight of the year candidate. The #2 ranked middleweight Yoel Romero as usual had a slow start to the fight while his nemesis the #7 ranked Paulo Costa exploded with a body kick and a low kick. Within no time, the fight turned into a back and forth exchange with Costa dropping Romero and then Romero dropping Costa to the canvas. Fighting in a clinch, Costa landed a knee directly to Romero’s groin, bringing the fight to a halt. Soon after the fight resumed, they continued their wild exchanges.

With so much being thrown from Costa’s side, he began to slow down and kept eating punches from Romero. The Brazilian got taken down at the last minute of the second round, giving a moral boost to the Cuban Romero.  The final round saw a non-stop exchange and surprisingly Costa experienced a resurgence as he constantly plodded forward and landed punches to the Romero’s head.

Despite being bloodied up, Costa had done enough to stay ahead in the judges scorecard and walked away with a unanimous decision win. With this victory, Costa is now on a five fight win streak and keeps his 14-0 record intact. In his post fight interview, Paulo Costa said “I bring my best for this fight. I’m training like a crazy man. Yoel Romero is a real beast. I just came here to take my belt. I will be waiting for Adesanya against Whittaker. After this fight, I want my chance to prove I am the champion.”

Costa has good chanced to be the No. 1 contender to face the winner of the UFC 243 middleweight title unification bout between Robert Whittaker and Israel Adesanya.

The co-main event of the UFC 241 was a long time coming, especially for Nate who was returned to action after three long years. He competed in California six years ago and this was his long awaited return as he took on the #7 ranked welterweight, Anthony Pettis who Nate called the ‘Wheaties Guy’ in his pre-fight trash talk. The fight lived up to the hype with Diaz bringing the pressure early on and Pettis countering with his heavy shots. Diaz got a take down with  90-seconds left in the first round, got on top of Pettis and dropped a bunch of strikes.

Diaz began to loose up and implement his game plan as he sucked Pettis right into the grind. Diaz connected with knees on the inside that stunned Pettis and mixed it with a huge punching combo in the final seconds of the second round. At one point, Diaz got the better of Pettis and almost finished him but Pettis survived and went to the ground. Diaz in his style, unloaded ground strikes but Pettis reversed into top position. Diaz stayed active tried to submit him and finally got the way to the top to finish the round.

Clearly Diaz didn’t feel any octagon rust or miss a step as he lay a beating on Pettis. With this big win, diaz called out Masvidal in his post fight interview. “The reason I was off is cause everybody sucked and there was nobody to fight. With this belt, I want to defend it against Jorge Masvidal, he had a good last fight. All respect to the man but there ain’t no gangsters in his game anymore. I know my man’s a gangster but he ain’t no west coast gangster.

Stipe Miocic defeated Daniel Cormier in Round 4 via TKO

Stipe Miocic called for this rematch and chose to sit back for one long year without competing until he got to lay hands on Daniel Cormier. His gamble worked and is once again the UFC heavyweight champion. But it didn’t come easy for Stipe who was out gunned for three rounds by DC in every aspect of the game. He got taken down, dominated on the ground and took some nasty blows to the head. DC was clearly leading the fight on the score card and with his significant strikes increasing with every passing minute, Stipe felt the fight slipping from his hands.

The only way for the former heavyweight champion to win the belt was either to knockout or submit DC. But it needed a change in the game plan. With just two rounds left, Stipe began targeting Cormier’s midsection and dug deep with a series of hard left punches. Cormier began to back up and Stipe connected a huge left to the body to finally make Cormier wince in pain. Stipe sensed this could be it and began unloading heavy strikes straight on DC’s chin until he crumbled to the ground and the referee stepped in to stop the fight.

After regaining his belt, Stipe said “DC’s a tough motherf—ker. I’m going to give it to him. Thank god cause that mothef—ker’s tough and he kept coming. It’s a fight, anything can happen. I knew I was hurting him, he was dropping his hands. I’ve just got to keep working, keep working, and he was going to leave something open and I started coming over with the right hand.”
