UFC 244 was supposed to be headlined by a welterweight title fight between the UFC current UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman and the former UFC interim welterweight champion Colby Covington. However, the negotiations of the fight fell off as the UFC and Covington couldn’t agree to terms. Though, it is now being reported that the Usman vs. Covington fight is soon going to happen and the UFC are very close to booking it.
It should be noted that Covington and Usman have plenty of bad blood and have a heated rivalry between them. Thus, whenever they fight, things are bound to get ugly.
The news that UFC 245 could potentially feature Usman vs Covington, that too as one of the three title fights on the card was first broken by noted combat sports journalist Ariel Helwani of ESPN. Later other media outlets like TSN Sports. Aaron Bronsteter of TSN back Helwani’s claims and said the following in his tweet:
Per
@arielhelwani on The MMA Reporters podcast, the UFC are closing in on booking Kamaru Usman vs Colby Covington for UFC 245. It would be one of three title bouts on the card.
