The Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism discussed permitting spectators during the UFC’s last trip to Fight Island on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi in September and October, but were unable to solidify plans at that time. The UFC has events scheduled in Abu Dhabi on Jan. 16, Jan. 20, and Jan. 23, culminating with UFC 257 featuring Conor McGregor against Dustin Poirier.

UFC to have fans in attendance for three January Fight Island cards

According to MMA Junkie, which did the necessary clicking to verify this sort of thing, socially-distanced (and extremely limited) tickets ranging from $795 Arab Emirates Dirham (USD 216) through AED 4,995 (USD 1,360) were completely sold out for Etihad Arena, host of the Jan. 23 PPV card. It’s all because of the Conor Mcgregor effect.

This is the third trip the UFC has taken to Abu Dhabi since July. The promotion held four events there in July and another five in September and October. All previous events were held inside the Flash Forum, however, the next three will move to the more spacious Etihad Arena. Tickets to the events are already sold out on the Etihad Arena website.

The UFC said the capacity for the events will be 2,000. The Etihad Arena can fit up to 18,000.

“I’m pumped to start the year with a straight week of great fights — Saturday, Wednesday, and Sunday — for fight fans all over the world with FIGHT ISLAND Triple Header,” UFC president Dana White said in a released statement. “Following two highly-successful editions of UFC Fight Island and the recent Formula One Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Abu Dhabi has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to host major international events in a safe and secure environment this year.”

Tickets that started at $795 Arab Emirates Dirham (about USD 216) and went all the way up to AED 4,995 (USD 1,360) all show as sold out at Etihad Arena’s official website.

The website also lists an abundance of health and safety rules that must be adhered to by fans, and though the total number of tickets available was not announced, the site says “seating capacity has been reduced to comply with social distancing rules.” Tickets remain available for UFC on ABC 1 next Saturday, as well as UFC on ESPN 20, which takes place Wednesday, Jan. 20. UFC on ABC 1 will be headlined by a featherweight fight between former champion Max Holloway and Calvin Kattar. Four days later, Michael Chiesa meets Neil Magny in the UFC on ESPN 20 main event. Tickets start at $595 AED ($162 USD)

UFC 257, of course, is the crown jewel of this third Fight Island series, with the main event featuring UFC superstars Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier. McGregor is the promotion’s biggest star and his return to the Octagon after one year away is sure to result in massive pay-per-view numbers for the UFC.
