Tonight’s UFC 314 event brought the Octagon back to Miami, and four participants ended up receiving performance bonuses.
The main attraction of the pay-per-view event was a men’s featherweight title bout between Diego Lopes and Alex Volkanovski. It turned out to be an amazing back-and-forth contest. Volkanovski emerged victorious in the first round. For most of round two, he maintained his dominance, until in the closing seconds, Lopes felled him with a right hand. The Australian had another strong round in round three, but Lopes’ dominance in round four demonstrated his tenacity and resolve. Although there was fierce competition in the fifth and final round, it became evident after 25 minutes of play that “The Great” had outscored Lopes and would be winning.
Paddy Pimblett and Michael Chandler’s much awaited lightweight fight served as UFC 314’s co-headliner. Pimblett delivered a completely dominant effort throughout the fight. From the first bell, “The Baddy” smothered and controlled Chandler with his strong low kicks and swift jab. Pimblett brought the fight to the floor and quickly knocked Chandler out with some hard ground and pound after injuring “Iron” with a knee early in the third round. The Liverpool native put up a fantastic display and appears destined for a bout with a strong contender next.
At the post-fight news conference after tonight’s bout, UFC executives declared that four combatants will receive performance bonuses.
