UFC: Alexander Gustafsson wants to chase DC even if it means moving to Heavyweight

Alexander Gustafsson is one determined individual.

Despite entertaining thoughts of entertaining Luke Rockhold’s proposed foray into the Light Heavyweight division, the Swede has his eye firmly set on rematching Daniel Cormier for his Title – even if it means he has to chase him up in weight.

Gustafsson is coming off a dominant display against Glover Teixiera in May of 2017, after which he has been sidelined due to injury.

However, he still harbours the hope that the nature of his performance would land him another tilt at the Title against Daniel Cormier.

As he told Ariel Helwani’s MMA Hour:

I’ve been a little bit frustrated because I was counting on the DC fight. Me and him fighting for the belt again, that was my plan. That was my plan basically, and it didn’t end up like that, so it’s been a little bit frustrating.

I’ve been injured for awhile too. I got injured not long after the fight I had against Glover, so I’m really motivated.

I’ve been out for awhile and I’m just tired of being out such a long period of time. I just want to be active and I feel the fire and I feel the motivation.

And now when [Cormier] goes up a weight class, we’re just sitting there on the sideline watching everything happen. So I’m a little bit frustrated, a little bit disappointed.

Current UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier is scheduled to go up in weight and fight Stipe Miocic at UFC 226, but while that promises to be a rollicking match-up, it leaves the Light Heavyweight division in a lurch, especially if Cormier wins.

And that, combined with the fact that other top fighters in the LHW division like Ilir Latifi and Jimi Manuwa also belong to his camp, has given Gustafsson pause to carefully think through his next step.

And he isn’t even ruling out a potential move to Heavyweight to chase the former Olympian.

It is a tricky situation.

As it comes to now and my positioning now, I’m just feeling that it doesn’t matter what happens, I’m just here to take that belt. That’s what my focus is and my purpose is right now.

I guess I have to do something about it. Maybe I need to eat a little bit more food or go up one weight class too. I don’t know, let’s see what happens.

I just want to have another good run with him[Daniel Cormier], and he has the belt, he has what I want.
