One of the UFC’s biggest stars Nate Diaz had made his long-awaited return recently at UFC 241, after defeating the former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis. He had then called out fan favourite UFC welterweight Jorge Masvidal. While fans were skeptical that the fight will ever be made, the UFC President Dana White recently confirmed on his Instagram that the duo will be headlining UFC 244 at Madison Square Garden!
It should be noted that UFC 244 was previously supposed to be headlined by a grudge title fight between the UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman and the former UFC interim welterweight champion Colby Covington. However, the negotiations for the fight recently fell through.
It should also be noted that this main event fight between Diaz and Masvidal will be the first non-title headlining a UFC PPV since the contest between the Diaz and his eternal rival Conor McGregor back at UFC 202.
White initially confirmed the fight by posting a promo video for the contest on his Instagram profile. He later spoke to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto and revealed further details about the fight. Here’s what he had to say:
It is the fight that the fans wanted to see. Nate Diaz, you know called out Masvidal (Jorge) after his win over Pettis. People have been talking about it, everyone has been hitting me up on social media to get this done. I can now announce that it is done.
It will be the main event. Five rounds of Diaz vs. Masvidal at Madison Square Garden…..I’m gonna put together a ‘BMF’ (Baddest Motherf**ker) belt for these two and they can headline for the BMF belt.
