Against the run of play, Polish Heavyweight Adam Wieczorek (10-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) managed to lock in a rare omoplata to defeat Indo- Canadian Arjan Singh Bhullar (7-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) at UFC on Fox 29 in Glendale, Arizona.

Arjan Singh Bhullar had already made history as he became the first fighter to walk to the octagon wearing a traditional Sikh turban. Interestingly, Wieczorek never really looked competitive against Bhullar but still managed to put himself in the history books as he became only the second fighter in the history of the UFC to secure a win with an omoplata.(via Twitter):

The fight started with Bhullar landing some really good shots on the feet and immediately securing a takedown very early in the first round. From top position, Bhullar landed some punches and elbows. However Bhullar was unable to stay active enough, which led to the referee standing them up again with 44 seconds remaining in the first round. Until this point Bhullar had already secured top position for 3 minutes and 42 seconds, enough to solidly him the first round on the scorecards.

The second round was no different as Bhullar landed some good strikes and a uppercut, immediately changing levels to a takedown. This time however, Wieczorek started looking for options off his back. Wieczorek first went for a kimura but Bhullar was able to adjust and get on top again. Wieczorek then tried an armbar. Bhullar again able to escape, this time Wieczorek had his right leg wrapped over Bhullar’s left shoulder. Wieczorek twisted his body leading to immense pressure on Bhullar’s shoulder, leading to Bhullar taping in agony.

The first ever victory via omoplata was pulled off by UFC veteran Ben Saunders against Chris Heatherly back in 2014.
