UFC: Ben Askren and Daniel Cormier share a hug backstage at UFC 230

The historic UFC 230 card live from the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York is a wrap. Needless to say, it witnessed history as double champ Daniel Cormier became the only fighter to successfully defend both of his belts as he dominated #2 ranked Derrick ‘The Black Beast’ Lewis via second round submission.

In the attendance however was UFC’s latest signed fighter, former Bellator and ONE FC welterweight champion, Ben ‘Funky’ Askren. Askren ran into Cormier backstage after Cormier successfully defended his title. Cormier was extremely elated watching Askren and embraced him with a hug. Cormier also clicked pictures with Askren and had some words of wisdom for him. (via Twitter):

Cormier seems to hold Askren in high regards due to Askren being an ex-Olympian in freestyle wrestling just like him. Cormier said he is expecting Askren to win the UFC belt just like he and another ex-Olympian Henry Cejudo did. Cormier advised Askren saying ‘Just wrestle, it’s that simple’.

Cormier represented the United States in 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece whereas Askren was a part of 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. Needless to say both Cormier and Askren use similar strategies in MMA which includes throwing their opponent on the canvas and hammering them with strikes or locking in a tight submission.

Undefeated Askren (18-0-0) is slated to take on former UFC welterweight champion ‘Ruthless’ Robbie Lawler at UFC 233 in January.
