Former title challenger Chad Mendes wants a crack at former opponent Frankie Edgar in his return after two and half years to the Octagon. Chad was suspended by USADA after a banned substance was found in his body. Chad claims that the said substance was an ingredient in a psoriasis cream which was used as a medication.
Chad Mendes lost to Frankie Edgar via a first round knockout at The Ultimate Fighter Finale in December, 2015 in Las Vegas. Six months later, he was suspended by USADA and his set to return after his suspension is over on June 10.
“I honestly would like to get that Frankie fight back,” Mendes said on a recent edition of The MMA Hour. “Frankie is obviously a top-level guy and he’s a guy that I know I can beat. That fight would be great. I honestly feel like any of the guys I match up with in the top ten, I match up great.”
State of the Featherweight Division
After the long layoff for Chad Mendes, the division has changed considerably with the champion Max Holloway set to face Brian Ortega at UFC 226 in July, former champ Jose Aldo facing Jeremy Stephens on July 28 and the emergence new prospects like Zabit Magomedsharipov, Yair Rodriguez, Mirsad Bektic and Josh Emmett. Frankie Edgar was recently beaten by Brian Ortega and had a quick comeback victory against Cub Swanson which is why Chad believes the rematch is perfect for his return to the division.
Chad has a unique situation with two of his teammates Josh Emmett and Darren Elkins in the top 10 of his division. Although Chad insists that it won’t be an issue for the Team Alpha Male fighters.
“It sucks now that Team Alpha Male is kind of taking over the featherweight division,” Mendes said. “I think we have four or five guys in top 15. We’ve already sat and talked. I told these guys, I love you all and I don’t want to fight you unless it’s for a title, but if it’s for a belt, we’re gonna scrap. I think everyone is on the same page as far as that goes. We’re not going to fight unless it’s for a belt. That’s kind of where we’re at at this point.”
