Chael Sonnen is known for his strong opinions. He has never held back when it comes to putting his words out there and his latest statements are no different.

Wrestling or Sambo? (PC: Metro UK)

This time around, the former UFC star took a dig at Lightweight contender Khabib Nurmagomedov. Sonnen went down strongly on Khabib and mentioned that Sambo is a fake sport.

“Sambo sucks, Sambo has always sucked and I don’t believe Khabib [Nurmagomedov] is a Sambo player. I think somewhere he just wanted to pay respect to Sambo. Being Dagestani, I believe he got the skills he got in a wrestling room. He clings to that Sambo. In the history of them setting up that [UFC] cage, there has never been a contender – let alone a stand-out – that was good at Sambo. It sucks. It’s not real. It’s a fake sport,” Sonnen noted on the Beyond the Fight podcast. (H/T MMA Mania)

Khabib is a wrestler

Khabib has been unstoppable so far in his career and the Russian has also piled up nine wins in the UFC. Despite this, Sonnen is not sold on the idea of Sambo and went on to call Khabib a ‘wrestler’.

“Sambo is the martial art of the Russian military. The Russians have a very good military so it adds credibility to Sambo. Nobody has stopped to think well, those sons of bitches have guns and tanks too. They’re not really out there doing this Sambo with their Sambo jackets on. I’m actually now taking joy in the fact that I know I’m going to offend a bunch of people. Let those crybabies cry. Sambo sucks. But Khabib doesn’t suck, he just pretends he does Sambo. That’s a wrestler right there.” Sonnen added.

Irrespective of whether his strong game is Wrestling or Sambo, Khabib’s next venture inside the cage will happen at UFC 223 when he faces Tony Ferguson for the UFC Lightweight championship.
