The date of 6th July may not hold a lot of significance for the rest of the world, but it has a special significance in MMA history, particularly for Chris Weidman.

It was on this day, 5 years back, that an underdog in Chris Weidman stunned long time UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva and the world with a left hook, ending one of the most dominant runs ever of a UFC champion.

Weidman came into the fight as a huge underdog against a champion whose reign had spread over a whooping 2457 days. However after much of Silva’s taunting, Weidman landed a left hook knocking Silva out cold.

A rematch was scheduled for UFC 168. Weidman dominated the first round. In the second round Weidman checked one of Silva’s leg kicks, breaking Silva’s left fibula and tibia and ending the fight via TKO.

Things have gone rather downhill for Silva who now awaits a USADA jurisdiction over a failed drug test. Silva has looked only a shadow of his former self after the fight.

Weidman also couldn’t keep up with the legacy that he took from “The Spider”.  He could only defend his title thrice, before losing it to Luke Rockhold and going on a three fight losing streak.
