Coach Mark Henry is well known for grooming champions like Eddie Alvarez and Frankie Edgar, veterans like Edson Barboza and Marlon Moraes and also young guns like Corey Anderson and Zabit Magomedsharipov.
However a slight miscommunication at the Fight Night Calgary’s main event this weekend, further led to his fight Eddie Alvarez’s gruesome loss.
Alvarez on top position on the instruction of his coach Mark Henry landed a vertical 12-6 elbow on Poirier. The elbow being illegal led to degree Mark Goddard separating them up. Seconds after that Poirier unleased a barrage of strikes on Alvarez leading to the finish.
Speaking to MMAjunkie, Henry cleared the air on the topic.
“He definitely did what he saw me do,” Henry said of Alvarez. “Definitely my fault. I definitely wasn’t meaning to be cheap at all.
“I’m not stupid. I’ve been doing this a long time. I know he can’t do a top elbow. Out of the hundreds and hundreds of fights that I’ve done, every single time they say you can’t do that elbow.”
Henry also said he had no problems about the ref Mark Goddard, how led to the separation.
“I’ve done a ton fights with (Goddard) as a ref, and if Goddard was in the (cage) again, I’d have 100 percent faith in him,” Henry said. “He’s a great ref.”
