The days are numbered for UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor’s title reign. There have long been a lost of question marks on McGregor’s MMA future and his return to the octagon has always been surrounded by a lot of uncertainty. Almost everyone has had their say on his future at some point or another. The latest one to do so is UFC lightweight contender Khabib Nurmagomedov’s coach, Javier Mendez. In a recent interview Mendez claimed that McGregor will soon be stripped of his title by the UFC.
McGregor had won the title in a highly dominating fashion against Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205. He had knocked out the former champion in a brutal way via punches in the second round. However, he hasn’t fought in the octagon ever since and has never even once defended his title in more than one and a half year.
Mendez who is a highly reputed coach and is associated with American Kickboxing Academy, recently gave an interview to Express Sport. He talked about McGregor soon being stripped of the title and also revealed that Nurmagomedov has improved a lot more for his fight at UFC 223. Here’s what he had to say:
I think he will get stripped, If he doesn’t relinquish it, I think he will get stripped. Because the contract has been signed by Tony and Khabib. They’re fighting for the real title.
He’s on point, and he’s actually better than he was last time when he prepared for Barboza. So people can expect a better Khabib than the Barboza fight.
He will be better for this fight than the other fight. Like I’ve said in many other interviews in the past, he’s always improving his game. His ground game has improved, but not by much as he’s pretty much a master on the ground.
But his stand up keeps improving leaps and bounds. So every time people see Khabib, it’s a new Khabib. So you will see a new Khabib on April 7.
