UFC: Cris Cyborg says she will adopt her niece at the end of the month and keep 7-year old promise

Cris Cyborg had a fantastic start to March with her 1st round TKO of Yana Kunitskaya earlier today in the main event of UFC 222.

And she’s about to have an even better end to the month.

Speaking at the post fight press conference, Cyborg spoke about why she was willing to step in on short notice and ‘save’ the UFC 222 card that had lost its initial headlining fight when UFC Featherweight Men’s Champion Max Holloway pulled out of his protracted title defence against Frankie Edgar with around four weeks to go, citing ankle injury.

While also outlining that her relationship with Dana White – once almost untenable – Cyborg did admit that she only stepped up to take the fight against Kunitskaya because it fell in the beginning of March.

She then went on to talk about how she would be busy in the later part of the month, when she travels to Brazil in order to officially adopt her niece and bring her back to the USA. She also said she’s just keeping a promise she made to her niece 7 years ago – who is like a daughter to her – that she would get settled in the USA and would adopt her as soon as she could.

It is widely expected that Cyborg will face Amanda Nunes, the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion next. Cyborg herself said that is the fight that makes sense, despite ruing the fact that it will involve two Brazilian champions fighting, since Amanda Nunes had called her out.

UFC president Dana White also agreed with her, saying that that’s the fight he’s looking to make next.
