The historic UFC 230 card live from the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York featured a heavyweight title fight. Needless to say, it witnessed history as double champ Daniel Cormier became the only fighter to successfully defend both of his belts as he dominated #2 ranked Derrick ‘The Black Beast’ Lewis via second-round submission.
In the first round after processing Lewis, Cormier didn’t waste any time to turn to his wrestling base as Lewis had to spend the majority of the first round on his back. The second round was no different, this time, however, Cormier locked a tight rear naked choke to get the job done. The title bout turned out to be a huge step up in competition for Lewis as he didn’t have much to offer.
The materialization of the fight itself didn’t go well with another highly ranked heavyweight, Curtis ‘Razor’ Blaydes. Blaydes was obviously not impressed by the fight.
“It was what I expected,” Blaydes said. “I knew it was going to be a slaughter. Derrick Lewis had no business being in that cage with him at all.”
Blaydes will headline Fight Night 141 in Beijing, China as he will try to avenge the only loss of his professional career against former title challenger Francis ‘The Predator’ Ngannou on November 24. As per the landscape of the UFC’s heavyweight division, a win might not cement Blaydes the title shot keeping in mind the return of Brock Lesnar, however, it would definitely take Blaydes a step closer.
