UFC Supremo Dana White confirmed to TMZ one of the worst kept secrets in the MMA world this year: that Conor McGregor will be stripped of his UFC Lightweight Title.

This means that undefeated phenom Khabib Nurmagomedov and Interim Champion Tony Ferguson will fight for the Undisputed Championship at UFC 223.

Speaking to TMZ, White had this to say about the fight and UFC Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor’s reaction to his decision:

I said in the last press conference that fight will be for the title. It’s not for the interim title, that fight will be for the title.

Is he upset? No, Conor understands. Conor made a lot of money, he wants some time off, but the division has to go on and the business has to go on.

The UFC President, however, also reinforced his belief that this was the right decision for the company as there is a real chance that Conor McGregor may never ever fight again after making upwards of a 100 Million dollars in his one off boxing super fight against Floyd Mayweather.

It was August and now it’s September. I say it all the time, when you get that kind of money…Conor might never come back. It’s a lot of money

He also added that should McGregor make a return, that he will likely fight the winner of the Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Tony Ferguson fight instead of a touted rematch against Floyd Mayweather.

However, he did concede that the only way a money-spinning rematch makes sense is if the boxing maestro steps into the Octagon – a proposition that Mayweather should “absolutely worried about” if it comes to pass.

Luckily for most MMA fans though, White did reveal that while talks were on with Floyd’s representatives, a deal was still far away from being made.
