There has been plenty of speculation about Chuck Liddell’s potential return to MMA. While the initial rumours about Liddell’s return surrounded a fight with eternal rival Tito Ortiz. There is even some smoke to the rumours about Liddell potentially coming out of retirement to fight one of the greatest and most dangerous fighters of all time, Jon ‘Bones’ Jones. While there is a certain level of excitement among some fans to witness “The Iceman” back in action again, a more vast majority of fans and pundits alike do not want Liddell to make a comeback at his current age. In a recent interview, UFC President Dana White too revealed his views about Liddell’s probable comeback.
Liddell who is currently 48 years old had retired from fighting about eight years ago. He had lost his last three fights all via KO or TKO’s. Though, he had recently expressed his interest in returning to competition.
His octagon career had ended with a string of brutal and heartbreaking defeats. Thus, the fans are reluctant about Liddell fighting again, as they do not want the legacy of a MMA great to be tarnished and also due to the sake of his personal health and well being.
There is some hearsay that a trilogy fight between Liddell and Ortiz might happen under Oscar De La Hoya’s promotion. In his statement, White not only disapproved of Liddell’ return but also verbally slammed De La Hoya as well as fellow boxing promoter Bob Arum. Here’s what he had to say:
The last thing I want to do is (expletive) on Chuck Liddell, because I love him, But I asked him to retire 10 years ago for a reason.
I don’t know if De La Hoya is that smart. He isn’t the brightest bulb on the porch. ‘Oscar De La Arum’ is not that bright. But I don’t know what he’s thinking. Hopefully, Chuck’s going to be his business partner and not fight.
