UFC Light Heavyweight Champ Daniel Cormier, with his win over Heavyweight kingpin Stipe Miocic at UFC 226 on Saturday, cemented his legacy as one the greatest fighters to ever step foot inside the Octagon.
The position he has reached has vested power in his hands to be his own shot-caller. And that is exactly what he plans on doing.
While whatever followed in the post fight interview has led the MMA world in believing that Brock Lesnar will be the next and probably DC’s only title defence at heavyweight, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it will be his next fight.
“It (retirement) doesn’t get pushed. The Lesnar fight gets pushed to Superbowl weekend or something. That fight gets pushed and I knock one out at Light Heavyweight before then. So that’s how you maneuver around that,” said Cormier during his recent appearance at Ariel Helwani’s MMA show. “Brock Lesnar will get his, Brock Lesnar will be the next Heavyweight I fight. Brock Lesnar is not guaranteed to be my next fight.”
However against whom his next fight at light heavyweight will happen may come as a shocker to many.
“Maybe I’ll go fight Shogun, that would be good. I am serious, maybe I will go fight Shogun. He has won a lot of fights in a row,” said “DC,” before adamantly stating that’s who he wants next should Rua defeat Anthony Smith at UFC Fight Night 134 on July 22.
“You know what? That’s who I want to fight, if Shogun wins, I want to fight Shogun. That’s who I’m fighting. I will go fight Shogun because he is a legend, he’s a great guy. I will go fight Shogun and then I will fight Brock Lesnar because Jones isn’t going to be back, I don’t think. I am at peace with that,” he stated.
While some believe it may be DC’s tactic to throw Gustafsson off who has demanded his next fight against Oezdemir to be changed to an interim title fight, the position DC is in it won’t be wrong to say that the company will let him call his own shots.
