The clock is ticking on UFC 230 on November 3 at the iconic Madison Square Garden. We have a stacked main card however we still don’t have a main event.

With former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones being cleared to resume his career after October 28, many people thought Jones to probably headline the event. However couple of days ago at the UFC 229 press conference, UFC President Dana White confirmed ‘100 percent’ that Jones won’t headline UFC 230.

As the mystery about the UFC 230 main event continues, a fighter on that card has a unique suggestion that would cement not only the main event but an idea that MMA community especially the fighters, wanted to be implemented from a long time.

Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier, who takes on #10 ranked and fan favourite Nate Diaz in the co-main event has suggested their fight to be a championship bout for a brand new 165 pound division, which would in turn become the main event of the card. (via Twitter):

Many fighters especially #5 ranked lightweight and former interim title challenger Kevin Lee have been an advocate of 165 pound division. Many fighters in including him have to cut upto as much as 35 pounds to make up the lightweight limit. Many former lightweights like Jorge Masvidal, Donald Cerrone, Rafael Dos Anjos, Chad Laprise, etc have moved up to the welterweight division. However, they have to fight guys at 170 pounds who cut weight all the way from 200 pounds. Hence, 165 pound division seems a to be the sweet spot for many fighters.

Poirier is coming of three consecutive finishes of former world champions namely Anthony Pettis, Justin Gaethje and Eddie Alvarez. Diaz is coming of a decision loss to former champ Conor McGregor at UFC 205 almost two years ago.
