UFC: Donald Cerrone on nerves being a factor in his fight against Yancy Medeiros

Speaking to FOX Sports 1, Donald Cerrone opened up on his recent win against Yancy Medeiros.

Apparently, Cerrone did experience considerable anxiety going into his fight with Medeiros.

Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone fought Yancy Medeiros over the weekend, and bested the latter by way of TKO.

Cerrone and Medeiros battled toe-to-toe in Round 1, as the latter did have his moments in the fight.

Nevertheless, despite both fighters seeming evenly matched, Cerrone let go of his hands at the end of Round 1, and obliterated Medeiros for the stoppage win.

However, Cerrone recalled that he went into this fight on a 3-fight losing streak against the likes of Jorge Masvidal, Robbie Lawler and Darren Till—something that severely affected his mental game going into the Medeiros fight.

Donald Cerrone opens up about his anxiety

“It was just funny. Everyone kept asking me, ‘How do you feel?’ I don’t even think about it until you guys tell me what a loser I am…We didn’t change anything. We just keep training. The sport’s ups and downs are so crazy. I just felt really good coming in.”

“This was a big nervy one. Losing three in a row, that’s pretty sucky,” Cerrone admitted. “Losing four, do I keep my job? So it’s like, ‘Damn.’ This is the hardest job to be excellent at. Going out there trying to perform every night on the one night is tough.”

“I wish I’d have got going a little more,” he said. “It’s hard to get started in the first round. I’m trying to conquer that. I’ve got to take all the punishment before I get going. I’ve got to figure that out.”

While Cerrone competed at welterweight on Sunday, he plans on returning to 155 pounds in the near future.

“I want 155, I want to get that belt. Khabib I’m coming,” Cerrone said. “I ain’t scared to fight you.”

Regardless, if the UFC were to offer Cerrone another fight at 170 pounds, it’s not likely that he’d turn it down.

“These big old boys hit hard and they’re a lot bigger [at 170]. I woke up at 168 and made weight easy,” Cerrone said. “Can we get a 165 weight class? That would be cool. I’ll just fight wherever they tell me.”

“I’ll take any fight,” Cerrone added. “They all pay the same to me, so it don’t matter what it is.”
