Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier has without a doubt cemented himself a title shot with consecutive finishes of three world champions in Anthony Pettis, Justin Gaethje and Eddie Alvarez.
However next in the line for the title is the former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor, who will be making his return after a layoff of almost two years.
Poirier being in the game for almost a decade now understands the fight business and is ready for another fight. The only fight which makes sense for him is the former UFC interim lightweight champion, Tony ‘El Cucuy’ Ferguson.
Ferguson who got injured this April by accidentally ‘tripping’ just few days before his fourth booking against Khabib Nurmagomedov, is seeking to comeback after a knee surgery. UFC President Dana White in an interview after UFC Calgary, said that he would like to book Ferguson on the same card as Nurmagomedov and McGregor.
“It’s too soon to tell,” Poirier said about fighting Ferguson. “If Dana [White] calls me and we make a deal for the fight, maybe. I don’t know. I’m the best in the world. I can beat all these guys.”
“I don’t plan on getting crazy out of shape or anything like that. I’m going to get back to the gym, work on some stuff. I have a bunch of buddies fighting in a couple months back in Louisiana and I want to help them get ready. So I’ll be around,” Poirier said.
“But in a perfect world, which this is not, I would have a full camp and have a fair shake at a title fight.”
