Poirier has been on a tear since his debut at Lightweight after a setback again ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor at Featherweight. He had a record of 6-1 (1) in the insanely stacked lightweight division. Gaethje eventhough coming off a loss against former UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez, has been proved as a bonus and ‘Fight of the Year candidate’ machine for the UFC. The fans therefore expected a brawl between these two warriors, and they didn’t disappoint as Gaethje and Poirier went toe to toe against each other for three hard rounds.

Gaethje found success with his stinging leg kicks whereas Poirier had his moments with the strikes. In the fourth round however, Poirier landed a counter to one of the Gaethje’s leg kick to close the show securing himself his seventh victory in the division. Poirier didn’t waste any time to call out for UFC Lightweight king Khabib ‘the Eagle’ Nurmagomedov.

In this post-fight interview Poirier said,

“I want to fight for gold, man. I’m not chasing rematches with Conor (McGregor), or rematches with Eddie (Alvarez). That’s not my goal. My goal isn’t to get even with these guys. My goal is to prosper and be a world champion and make money and retire and say, ‘I did it. I just want to go to sleep with that belt around my waist one night and tell my wife, ‘I did it.’ Years and years ago, in 2006, I didn’t have a car, and (my wife) would drive me to weigh-ins. We would sleep in broken-down motels and fight the next day, just me and her. I just want to say, ‘I did it,’ man.”
