Werdum broke his silence about the situation through a post on Instagram and said that the whole situation is a misunderstanding. He also went on to add that he has always been careful about keeping the sport clean.

“Hey guys, I got up this morning to the news that one of my urine samples from April tested positive for a prohibited substance. I am working with my team, the UFC and USADA to understand what happened. I’ve always been careful with everything I take and I’ve always supported a clean sport. We will work hard to solve this misunderstanding and I hope soon to be able to go back to the octagon and do what I love,” Werdum noted.

This is the first anti-doping violation in the long career of Werdum. The sample which tested positive was collected just a month after Werdum’s knockout defeat against Alexander Volkov back at UFC Fight Night 127.

UFC Russia main event up in the air

As per the rumours, the 40-year-old Brazilian was set to headline UFC’s first ever event in Russia. Various reports suggested that UFC was planning to have Werdum vs. Aleksei Oliynyk as the main event of UFC Fight Night 136 in Moscow. The event is currently scheduled to happen on September 15, 2018.

Now that Werdum is notified about a potential anti-doping violation, it would be interesting to see how UFC handles the situation.

Prior to his defeat against Volkov, Werdum was riding high on momentum as he had picked up two back to back wins against Walt Harris and Marcin Tybura. Werdum is currently 23-8 in his career and has been one of the most active names in UFC’s Heavyweight division over the past few years.
