UFC Fight Night 138 Oezdemir vs. Smith – Play by Play Updates & Live Results

Court McGee defeated Alex Garcia via Unanimous Decision

McGee started off on a slow note as Garcia began to swing for the fences right from the first round. McGee took some heavy shots and could only respond back with leg kicks which had zero effect on Garcia. The fight result could have gone either ways given a slow start from McGee who looked sluggish and tired most of the time. His moment of triumph came when caught Garcia with a jab and dropped him on the mat and controlled him with a dominant position up until the remaining 90 secs of the second round. Garcia was tired as the fight progressed into the final round. His strikes had no power and was easily taken down with a single leg takedown. With this win, McGee finally got back to the win column after suffering two straight losses in 2017 .

Gian Villante defeated Ed Herman via Split Decision

A very close fight to judge up until the final seconds of the third round as Herman and Villante threw everything they had right from the go. Both the light heavyweights stepped inside the octagon with one intention – to quickly finish the fight and get their hands raised. But neither of them was willing to go down despite trading strike after strike. Villante was able to land a clean right that put a cut over the left eye of Herman in the first round. Looking to get back his timing Herman used his jab precisely and landed some heavy jabs that took the toll on Villante. They both were exhausted and hardly had anything left in the tank by the third round which was razor close to judge. With this loss, Herman loses three in a row and clearly expressed his disappointment over the scoring.

Andre Soukhamthath defeated Jonathan Martinez via Unanimous Decision

After losing at the hands of rising star Sean O’Malley, Bantamweight Andre Soukhamthath proved with his performance tonight that he might be down but not over. He spoiled the debut of Martinez with a high paced and high volume striking game showcasing his standup skillset. The first and third round were where he shined as his landed elbows and knees that put Martinez in tight spots. Martinez tried to steal his thunder in the second and managed to take Andre to the ground. With this win, Andre regains his confidence as he presses forward in this packed weight class.

Misha Cirkunov defeated Patrick Cummins via Submission in Round 1

It turned out to be a short and quick night for Cummins as he looked to take Cirkunov to the mat in the opeings seconds of the first round. But Cirkunov, a Judo expert stood his ground against the cage and resisted the takedown for over a minute. He then used his own takedown to put Cummins on the mat. From there on it was a downfall for Cummins who had no other option but to tap out to a arm triangle choke.

Michael Johnson defeated Artem Lobov via Unanimous Decision

A slow start to the co-main event eventually turned out to be an all out stand up battle for full fifteen minutes, until Johnson decided to take Lobov to the ground in the final moments of the third round. Johnson had to adjust his movement looking at the awkward fighting style of the Russian Hammer. Both the featherweights slugged it out and landed some heavy leather on each other. Lobov with his trademark hands down approach bruised the left side of Johnson, while he ate all the jabs & straights in the process. Johnson’s striking was good but not good enough to stand with the other featherweights in the division. He picked up his 20th win while the Russian Hammer succumbs to 15th loss. It looks dicy where Lobov heads from here.

Anthony Smith defeated Volkan Oezdemir via Submission in Round 3

With the biggest win of his fighting career now and three wins in a row, Smith is definitely a lot closer to contesting for the light heavyweight title belt next year. He’s a worthy opponent and proved why he should not be counted out against the heavy favorites. Smith’s game plan worked – Weather the early two rounds and look for an opening or error from Volkan, capitalize it into a submission or a KO. But it was not easy for him as he had to take a lot of leg kicks in the process  and also had to give up two rounds in favour of Volkan. His strategy might have worked today, but if he plans to go toe to toe with the top 3 light heavyweights, then he has to bring more to the game.
