UFC Fight Night 128 in Atlantic city features a rematch as co-main event as #3 ranked featherweight contender and former UFC lightweight champion Frankie ‘the Answer’ Edgar (22-6-1 MMA, 16-6-1 UFC) takes on #4 ranked featherweight contender Cub Swanson (25-8 MMA, 10-4 UFC).

A title shot at UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway looked imminent for either of these two individuals, however stepping in their way was #1 ranked featherweight contender Brian ‘T-City’ Ortega. Their title endeavors were halted as Ortega managed to run through both of these legends to cement his case for the title. Hence, both Edgar and Swanson would fight with a feeling of resurgence.

Ortega met Edgar at UFC 222 in March. Edgar was previously set to fight Max Holloway for the title, but Holloway pulled out due to an injury and was replaced by Ortega. The former lightweight champion was the heavy favourite to hand Ortega the first loss in his career. Ortega is a BJJ specialist as he owns a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Against all the odds, Ortega landed a vicious uppercut in the first round to shut the lights off Edgar, becoming the first fighter ever to stop Edgar in his 13 year long career. Long time fans were devastated to see Edgar losing in a such a way. Edgar on this response of the community said,

“It was special, it really was. It just goes to show that I’ve been carrying myself the right way. If I was acting like a jerk my whole career (Laughs), I don’t think anyone would go out on a limb and say those nice things about me. In the end, it’s definitely about wins and losses in our sport and what titles you get and what you can achieve. But character is going to go a long way. Even in my wrestling days, I always felt I had a good rep among my peers, and that’s just because of the way I carry myself. I have young kids that wrestle now, and I coach kids that wrestle, and I’m always gonna try and set that example.”

Edgar and Swanson last met in November, 2014. Edgar locked in a neck crank in last few seconds of the fight to edge out Swanson. Edgar on this pivotal rematch said,

“Everyone changes from fight to fight and when you’ve got some miles on you, you’re gonna change even more. I think he (Swanson) is gonna come in more motivated. Maybe he sees some weakness there he needs to exploit, but he’s gonna realize that I’m the same guy. I’m still motivated, I’m still hungry. I know I had that loss, but it wasn’t like I was getting beat up or anything; I felt I was doing really well in that fight. He (Ortega) caught me with a shot I didn’t see, rocked me pretty good, and that’s just the way it goes. But I’m going out there to prove I’m still the best in this division, or at least one of them.”
