A featherweight showdown between former UFC Lightweight champion Frankie ‘The Answer’ Edgar (22-6-1) vs Cub Swanson (25-8) 2 is set for UFC Fight Night 128 at Atlantic city on April 21.
They first met at the main event of UFC Fight Night Austin,Texas more than three years ago.Edgar won that fight via neck crank submission with just 4 seconds left in the five round featherweight main event.
This is a fairly quick turnover for Edgar who would be fighting in his home state of New Jersey. Edgar fought recently at UFC 222 on March 3,2018 in Las Vegas.Edgar earned his title shot vs champion Max Holloway and was set to face him at UFC 218 on December 3,2018 however Edgar pulled out of the fight and was replaced by former UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo. The fight was rescheduled for UFC 222 but Holloway pulled out and was replaced by Ortega. However Edgar’s road to the title had a hindrance as Ortega knocked out Edgar with 16 seconds remaining in the first round to become the first man ever to finish Edgar in his 13 year long career. Before the fight,Edgar was on a two fight win streak against Jeremy ‘Lil Heathen’ Stephens and surging contender Yair ‘Al Pantera’ Rodriguez.
Swanson on the other hand just like Edgar is coming off of a loss against Ortega as well at UFC Fight Night Fresno on September 9,2017.Swanson was agree agent after the fight but now gets a stern matchup for his comeback. In his fight with Ortega,Swanson was finding great success on his feet in the beginning of the fight, however Ortega locked in his trademark arm triangle at the end of the first round but was saved by the bell.Ortega in the second round ended up locking a guillotine on Swanson,Swanson was struggling but Ortega adjusted his arms mid-choke to snap Swanson’s four fight win streak.
Both Edgar and Swanson would love to out up a show for the fans and get back to winning ways. With Brian Ortega getting his title shot against Holloway and another virtual eliminator between Jose Aldo and Jeremy Stephens in works for UFC 224 in Rio de Janeiro, the winner of this fight would certainly get a step closer to the title fight.
