UFC: Henry Cejudo taking lessons from Colby Covington for promoting his fights

Henry ‘The Messenger’ Cejudo will get his shot at redemption against UFC Flyweight champion and pound-for-pound #1 ranked fighter Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson at UFC 227 in August.

UFC’s Flyweight division has the reputation of being one of the steepest divisions in the history of the sport. With the division being dominated by their only champion Johnson, the division falls short of contenders.

At this point, former Olympic Freestyle wrestling gold medalist and recent Wrestling Hall of Fame Inductee Cejudo wants to focus on the entertainment aspect of the game as well. Cejudo realises that he needs to promote his fights and create some waves across the MMA community to get him even bigger fights.

For that purpose, he seeks to take lessons from none other than the former UFC interim welterweight champion Colby ‘Chaos’ Covington. Covington receives a lot of criticism from the community for his trash talk however that style might serve Cejudo’s purpose.

“I come from the sport of wrestling where there’s nothing but respect on the mat,” Cejudo told MMAjunkie. “In MMA, it’s a sport, but it’s entertainment, too. Look at Colby Covington. The guy can fight and the guy can talk. To a lot of people he just grinds people out, and many people consider him boring, but because he opens his mouth, people want to watch him fight. A lot of people want to see him win, a lot of people want to see him lose. There’s more eyes on him. I’ve learned that in MMA it’s the entertainment side. I’m grasping that from now on. If I have to pick on somebody to get the fight, then that’s what I have to do, especially for the flyweight division.”
