Ronaldo Souza believes that he is closer to the Middleweight championship than most people think he is. Souza will be fighting Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 224 in Rio de Janeiro on May 12 and interestingly, the card will be followed by a UFC 225 where Robert Whittaker will defend his Middleweight title against Yoel Romero.

While talking to MMA Fighting, Souza told that he is just two fights away from being the Middleweight champion.

“If you analyze it, there’s no better option. Chris Weidman can’t fight now, he’s hurt. Kelvin Gastelum is here to fight, I’m here to fight, you know? Here’s what’s going to happen: in two fights I’ll become the UFC middleweight champion. No disrespect, it’s just me being confident. In two fights, I’ll become the UFC middleweight champion. I’m working for that, and I believe in it, and it will happen. Kelvin is a tough fight, difficult, complicated, but I’m here to defeat anyone and I will win two fights to become UFC champion.” Souza said.

Let the better man win

Souza, who is currently 25-5 will head into the fight Gastelum on the back of an impressive KO win over Derek Brunson which took place back in January. Prior to this, Souza had lost to current champion Whittaker and challenger Yoel Romero.

As he has a history with both the men who will fight at UFC 225, Souza is hoping that the better man wins.

“I just hope it’s a good fight and the better man wins. I want to be there, front row, watching who will win. I will fight the winner of this fight. I’m not rooting for any of them. Whoever has a better gameplan will win that night.” He added.

Apart from Gastelum vs. Souza, UFC 224 will also see Amanda Nunes defend her Women’s Bantamweight championship against Raquel Pennington. Vitor Belfort vs. Lyoto Machida is another major attraction on the pay-per-view.
