UFC Liverpool was a huge success, the event made a massive $1.3 million gate. The entire Echo Arena was flooded with 8,250 attendance cheering and singing for their fellow fighters.

The card however finished and caused waves around the Twitter community for a controversial decision. In the main event, the hometown hero Darren Till defeated two-time welterweight title challenger Stephen Thompson via unanimous decision. However that was not the only disputable decision of the night.

On the antepenultimate fight of the card, SBG Ireland product Makwan ‘Mr.Finland’ took on Mississippi’s Jason ‘the Kid’ Knight. Amirkhani won the fight via a razor thin split decision. A judge however gave all the three rounds to Knight whereas the other two judges gave only one round to Knight. Not so long ago Knight was a surging prospect but the setback handed him his third loss in a row. ‘The Kid’ definitely thinks his hand should have been raised that night.

UFC: Jason Knight claims he won against Makwan Amirkhani, thinks UFC judges should have some MMA experience - Jason Knight

He took to Twitter saying, “By the new rules I was supposed to win that fight … I think the UFC judges should be required to have some kind of MMA experience …. How do u lay on someone scared to death to throw any fuckin thing and win ??? Look at the f***** stats !!! SMDH.” (via Twitter):

Knight and Amirkhani came into the fight with some beef. First round, according to many, was the best round of the night. Amirkhani contrary to his normal nature, started playing mind games with Knight. He clipped Knight with several lead hooks leading to blood gushing out of Knight’s face. Amirkhani attempted a flying knee which missed, Knight decided to take the fight to the ground but found himself on his back instead. Once the fight went standing, Knight landed a vicious uppercut and another blow in few seconds dropping Amirkhani twice. Knight pulled guard after securing knockdowns.

The second round was relatively inactive however Amirkhani managed two takedowns and it seemed 1-1 for both the fighters going into the third. In the third round, Knight again pulled the guard several times. He had Amirkhani in rubber guard and tried to submit him with triangle choke.

According to the new rules, a fighter does not have to necessarily dominate his opponent for a 10-8 round. Knight thought with two knockdowns in the first round, he should have been given a 10-8 round which would have at least had the fight to a majority draw or perhaps Knight winning it. Knight pulling the guard several times seems to have been costed him the final round as the opponent on his back is generally considered to be losing.

Many fighters are advocate of judges having some kind of MMA experience so they could relate to the fight more before passing their judgement. Controversial decisions are the part and parcel of the fight game, hence the age old saying of ‘Never leave it to the hands of the judges’ prevails.
