Former women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk got things back to winning ways at UFC Calgary after two consecutive losses to current champ ‘Thug’ Rose Namajunas.
Jedrzejczyk still believes she is the best strawweight in the world and is eyeing for the title shot ever since. But as per the picture women’s strawweight division, Jessica Andrade cemented her spot as the next title challenger with a ridiculous knockout of former title challenger Karolina Kowalkiewicz. However another potential title bout awaits for Jedrzejczyk, this time around at flyweight against Valentina Shevchenko.
Shevchenko who was slated to face former flyweight champion Nicco Montano for the title was left opponent less after Montano pulled out. With Montano being stripped and with the flyweight division lacking contenders, even Shevchenko is open for a title bout against Jedrzejczyk. When asked about the fight, Jedrzejczyk feels the same.
“Who knows – maybe this year,” Jedrzejczyk told MMAjunkie, adding: “The thing is, I’m very open to move up and face Valentina. I always want to face the best athletes, the best fighters in the world, and Valentina is one of the greatest muay Thai and also MMA fighters.
“I’m very open, but I must sit down and discuss some things. We’ll see what’s going to happen.”
Shevchenko and Jedrzejczyk have met thrice in the past from 2006 to 2008, however in Muay Thai fights where Shevchenko was able to defeat Jedrzejczyk in all the three fights. Jedrzejczyk will like to avenge her loss under the UFC banner.
“One of my biggest dreams is becoming a champion in the 125-pound division and becoming a champion in two different divisions,” Jedrzejczyk said. “I’m still dreaming about it, and I know it’s going to happen sooner than later.”
