Few days ago, former light heavyweight champion Jon ‘Bones’ Jones announced his arrival.

Jones dodged a possible four-year suspension as an arbitrator issued a 15-month suspension to Jones for violation of USADA’s doping policy which makes him eligible to resume his career from October 28.

MMA community were speculating Jones to headline the iconic UFC 230 card at Madison Square Garden on November 3 as the card is still short of a main event. However during the UFC 229 press conference, UFC President Dana White made it crystal clear that Jones won’t headline the card.

With that being said, Jones’ arch rival, current light heavyweight and heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier is slated to take on former heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, the only matchup which makes sense for Jones is a rematch with a man who gave Jones his toughest test till date, two-time title challenger Alexander ‘The Mauler’ Gustafsson.

The duo first met at UFC 165 on September 21 five years ago. The bout was super close and Jones managed to edge Gustafsson via a unanimous decision. However many people thought, Gustafsson won the fight and that Jones was given the victory due to favouritism. Exactly five years after Jones took to Twitter claiming his victory was ‘earned’ and not ‘given’. (via Twitter):

The first round featured Jones throwing a lot of leg kicks and Greg Jackson’s special oblique kicks. However, Gustafsson was able to hold one of the kick and secure a takedown. It marked the fight time ever that Jones has been taken down. Also, Jones suffered a vicious cut which had his corner apply generous amount of Vaseline throughout the fight.

The entire fight was pretty much a high volume chess match with Jones throwing 137 strikes and Gustafsson throwing 114.

A rematch between these two warriors is certainly capable of exploding the ceiling of any arena.
