Neil Magny suffered a huge blow recently when his UFC Liverpool fight with Gunnar Nelson fell through. It was Nelson’s injury that forced UFC to call off the fight and later; Jorge Masvidal was ready to replace Nelson on the card by fighting Magny at catchweight.
Magny, however, refused to pick up the fight and noted the following on his Instagram account.
“It’s better to be prepared for an opportunity and not have one, than to have an opportunity and not to be prepared for it”
During his recent appearance on the MMA Hour, Masvidal opened up about the incident and had some hard words for Magny.
“Magny has said no two times in the past, this one here will be a third time. The other two times was at 170 pounds. So maybe he can say that he’s a professional and he stays ready, but he’s such a fucking square, saying that 180 was…whatever he just didn’t want to do it. Mind you, I was a 155’r three years ago,” Masvidal said. (via MMA Mania)
UFC was excited about the fight
Masvidal went on to add that UFC was very excited about the fight.
“I know for a fact that the UFC wanted the fight and were very excited about the fight. So now you know that there is a bitch in the building and his name is Magny. I’m not saying UFC accepted 180, but when the offer came to them I know they were like, ‘Let’s do it, let’s try to make it happen.’ But this fucking coward said no,” Masvidal added.
The 33-year-old Masvidal is currently 32-13 and is also on a two-fight losing streak after losing out to Stephen Thompson and Demian Maia. Neil Magny, meanwhile, is coming off a win against Carlos Condit and holds a professional record of 20-6. UFC is still on the lookout for an opponent for Magny but nothing has been confirmed as of now.
