UFC welterweight division is as stacked as it ever was. Recently Darren Till was given an opportunity by the UFC to fight champ Tyron Woodley for the title. Howwever another Englishman in #11 ranked Leon ‘Rocky’ Edwards is causing waves in the welterweight division.
Edwards (16-3 MMA, 8-2 UFC) last fought agai, nst veteran Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone at Fight Night Singapore in June. He won the bout via unanimous decision and topped it off with a callout of #6 ranked Jorge ‘Gamebred’ Masvidal.
Masvidal did agree for the fight however hasn’t put forward any negotiations from his side and is currently competing in a Spanish reality television show.
With Masvidal unavailable, Edwards has decided to shift his focus on different possibly bigger options. He has Argentinian powerhouse #10 ranked Santiago Ponzinibbio and former lightweight champion and welterweight interim title challenger Rafael Dos Anjos on his radar.
“I went over to the U.S. ahead of that press conference. We had a meeting [with the UFC] and we really tried to get that Masvidal fight, but it didn’t work out,” Edwards told MMA Fighting.
“I’m not hanging everything on Masvidal. The aim for me is to get that world title. If he’s too busy with reality TV shows, I’ll turn my attention to Robbie Lawler or RDA. Either Masvidal, Robbie Lawler, or Rafael Dos Anjos would be good for me in December. All I can do is wait and see, and hopefully there will be no more excuses,” he said.
