He was considered by many to be the uncrowned champion at lightweight. However, the Russian finally had his coronation at UFC 223 by defeating Al Iaquinta via unanimous decision.

He was initially expected to face Tony “El Cucuy” Ferguson at UFC 223. However, the fight again failed to happen as Ferguson, who was the interim UFC lightweight champion at the time, injured his knee in a freak accident as he apparently turned to greet someone. Thus, effectively injuring himself out of the fight. Nurmagomedov was then matched-up for a super fight with the UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway. Even Holloway soon dropped out as his weight-cut was prematurely stopped by the NYSAC. After a brief possibility of a potential bout with former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis, but instead Al Iaquinta was called-up as a late replacement to fight the Russian.

Nurmagomedov recently did a live chat with his fans on social-media. He answered a lot of questions regarding his next opponent. He also revealed that he is now expecting to fight a lot sooner. Here’s what he had to say:

I don’t know when it’s going to be but now we talk about this with the UFC, It’s going to be maybe 9 September or maybe 6 October. I don’t know about opponent – Conor [McGregor], GSP [Georges St-Pierre], whoever. It doesn’t matter, we’ll see. Next couple of weeks it’s going to be very fun because now we’re beginning to talk about my next fight with the UFC.

I feel great, I feel good. Now we have Ramadan. We’re training only at night. Feeling good, feeling great, my weight is good, my shape is good. I always train every day, sometimes two times.
