The UFC 224 main card featured a striker versus grappler matchup as Amanda ‘ABC’ Cooper took on promising prospect Mackenzie Dern.

Dern made her debut at UFC 222 in March against Ashley Yoder. She missed weight by just a pound and made weight later in the extra time given to her. This time however the margin extended up to a unprofessional seven pounds. This led to widespread criticism all over the MMA community. Cooper could have denied the fight if she wanted to but she accepted it. Dern won the fight fairly quick in the first round. However, it came at a big price, as big as $13,050.

Speaking with Ariel Helwani on the MMA Hour last week, Dern made the above statement. As per the UFC paying scheme, a fighter is scheduled to be paid  ‘show’ money to appear and a ‘win’ bonus (which is same as the show money) if the fighter wins.

Dern earned a sum of $29,000 to appear and an addition $29,000 to win totaling $58,000. As per the UFC policy, she had to pay 30% of her show money to Cooper which totalled $8,700. The commissioner then fined her an additional 15% of her win money, which came to a total of $4,350. Dern hence handed over $13,050 to Cooper.

Moving forward, Dern has made a decision to work with UFC Performance Institute in Las Vegas to address her weight cutting issues. She might have to undergo a mock weight cut just like featherweight Jared Gordon to prove that she can make the strawweight limit. Dern has failed to make the 115 strawweight limit 40% of the times she has attempted it.
