Conor McGregor has created a lot of controversy via his comments about wanting to step-in and replace Holloway to fight Frankie Edgar in the main-event of UFC 222. There were a lot rumours about whether McGregor’s claims were true or not, though they were recently confirmed by Edgar himself. However, Mystic Mac’s offer was full of contingencies was rather peculiar and was thus rejected by Edgar. The current featherweight champion Max Holloway has now responded to McGregor’s claims in a rather sarcastic manner on Twitter.
“The Notorious” has a MMA record of 21-3 and created history by becoming the first fighter ever to simultaneously hold belts in two different weight classes. He last fought and defeated and defeated former UFC lightweight champion, Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 via TKO due to punches in the second round. He was then soon stripped of the featherweight title due to not defending his title belt. He hasn’t made a single title defense of his lightweight title as well and was instead busy in a cross-sport boxing match against, Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather. If reports are to be believed then the current 155 pounds kingpin might soon be stripped of his lightweight title as well.
On the other hand, Holloway has been sensational since his loss to McGregor about five years ago. He has matured into a much better fighter and is currently making a strong case to be considered as the pound-for-pound best fighter currently. He was scheduled to defend his title against Edgar in the main-event of UFC 222 but was instead forced to pull out of the fight due to a leg injury.
Noted MMA journalist, Ariel Helwani had posted a short clip of Artem Lobov talking about McGregor wanting to fight Edgar at UFC 222 for a non-existent 165 pounds title on Twitter. Holloway had replied to that post via his own tweet, in which he had sarcastically mocked the Irishman. His choice of words in his comments was interestingly quite similar to McGregor in his claims about UFC 222.
