UFC Strawweight Michelle Waterson secured a win last night at UFC Glendale when she defeated Cortney Casey-Sanchez via a split decision. The win helped Waterson get back on the winning side after suffering two back to back defeats against Tecia Torres and Rose Namajunas respectively.
After the fight, Waterson opened up a string of topics to the media and one interesting issue from the lot was her appeal for a women’s Atomweight division in the UFC. Waterson, who was an Atomweight champion in Invicta Fighting Championship before joining the UFC said that there are many fighters out there who could benefit from adding the division.
“Of course. There’s so many women that compete in MMA that train just as hard as the guys do and they need a home. They need a place to showcase their skills. Absolutely I think they should add the weight class. It would expand the UFC roster and there are a lot of entertaining 105’ers that are heavy hitters, they’re fast, they’re good submission artists. So yeah, I think they should definitely add it.” she said. (Quotes via MMA Nytt)
More fighters than the Featherweight division
Waterson also went on to add that if UFC does decide to add a new atomweight division, it would attract more fighters than the currently present Featherweight division.
“I think there are more atomweight fighters than there are fighters in Cyborg’s weight class. They have a weight class for her. 100-percent. It should happen and it eventually will.” She added.
There were rumours about UFC adding two new weight classes along with their new television deal but no official confirmation has been made yet. Interestingly, the Women’s Atomweight division was one of the divisions that were mentioned in the rumour. As for Waterson, she is currently 15-6 in her career and the win against Sanchez is expected to put her back on track in the Women’s Strawweight rankings.
