Two-division UFC star Conor McGregor issues a plea to God to save Italy from the coronavirus crisis.
Coronavirus pandemic has Italy the hardest amongst all the European Union nations. So far the virus has claimed the lives of 5,476 with Italy announcing that 651 dead on Sunday alone.
The situation is so dire in Italy that the death toll has surpassed that of China. The population of Italy is 60 million and it recorded at least 5476 deaths or roughly 2200 more than in China — a country with a population over 1 Billion. There are also 47,000 confirmed cases in Italy which is half of China. The mortality rate in Italy because of coronavirus is 8%. China is the birthplace of the recent COVID-19 outbreak.
The outbreak can be traced to a wet market in Wuhan province.
One reason behind the high death rate in Italy is because of the older demography. As per Prof Walter Ricciardi, scientific adviser to Italy’s minister of health, the high mortality rate is also because of the presence of the second-highest number of old people amongst all the countries worldwide. As per a study, 87% of the people that are dead because of coronavirus are folks over 70 years old.
“The age of our patients in hospitals is substantially older – the median is 67, while in China it was 46,” Prof Ricciardi says. “So essentially the age distribution of our patients is squeezed to older age and this is substantial in increasing the lethality.” (H/T – The Telegraph)
