Former two-division champion Conor McGregor has expressed interest in fighting in July. But only after he is assured that the fighters fighting on the three cards within a span of a week in Florida are safe afterward.
The Coronavirus pandemic has wreaked havoc around the world and put most countries of the world to a standstill. Almost every sporting event around the world is affected by this pandemic including the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). UFC had to cancels all events scheduled for the month of April and two events in March.
However, the biggest mixed martial arts organization will also be the first major sports organization in the US to conduct live sporting events. UFC 249 will be the first major card to take place this weekend on May 9 and will be headlined by Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje. UFC also has a card scheduled for May 13 to he headlined by Anthony Smith and Glover Teixeira and on May 16 to be headlined by Walt Harris and Alistair Overeem.
Conor McGregor to view UFC 249 to scout, check safety
Audie Attar who is Conor McGregor’s manager stated that Conor McGregor is training in Ireland and is in top shape. However, Conor McGregor will only consider fighting in July if UFC is able to pull off the fight cards scheduled for May 9, May 13, and May 16.
“Conor is very curious to see whether the health and safety of the athletes and staff are ensured,” Attar said. “He wants to make sure everyone is taken care of properly.”
“While Conor’s desire would be to fight in front of another sold-out crowd,” Attar said, “he does understand what him fighting in an empty arena could do for people at home and would consider if he is comfortable with the way the UFC is holding these events from a health and safety standpoint.” (h/t – ESPN)
Before the pandemic worsened Conor McGregor wanted to fight on the July 12 card scheduled to take place in Las Vegas. The Irishmen planned on fighting three times in 2020 after fighting only twice since 2017.
McGregor is coming off of a first-round TKO win over Donald Cerrone at UFC 246 in January earlier this year in Las Vegas.
