The former UFC champ champ Conor McGregor set the MMA and combat sports world on fire back in January when he brutally knocked out cold the MMA and UFC veteran, the legendary Donald Cowboy Cerrone in the main event of UFC 246. He had then announced that he will return to action later in July, though who his July opponent will be. His coach Owen Roddy has now shed some light on not only the Irishman’s potential return date but also who his next opponent might be.
Roddy was recently in a conversation with noted combat sports journalist Ariel Helwani of ESPN. He revealed that the plan is still for McGregor to come back and fight on a UFC fight card on July 11. He also said revealed that former WSOF lightweight champion Justin Gaethje might be the one who McGregor faces next. Here’s what he had to say:
Most definitely. That’s the plan hopefully. Bring the UFC back to life as well with all these shows being canceled and stuff like that, I think a fight on July 11 would bring the UFC back to life and get everybody back on track. So my fingers are crossed and I’m sure the rest of the world fingers are crossed for that fight. Anyone to be honest but you know, maybe Gaethje. There is a lot of talk about Gaethje. I mean, he’s an exciting fighter, Gaethje. I would like to see it, I’m sure you’d like to see it, and I’m sure the rest of the world would like to see it. So yeah, potentially that, but to be honest, anyone. I know Conor is raring to go and everyone will be raring to go by the time July comes around.
