Diego Sanchez defeated Michel Pereira in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 167. The fight took place at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, New Mexico.
Sanchez won the fight via DQ in the third round. Sanchez was down in the first two rounds as the Brazilian dominated and beat him to the punch. Michel Pereira outworked him in the first two rounds and was on his way to win the third. However, in the third round, with less than two minutes left on the clock, he landed an illegal knee.
That illegal knee sliced opened a deep cut on Sanchez’s a forehead. Referee Jason Herzog immediately stepped in to pause the fight. He said he was willing to give Sanchez all the time he needed to recover.
However, the referee gave him options about if he wanted to continue fighting. Sanchez opted not to continue and won the fight via DQ. For this fight, Sanchez had Joshua Fabia in his corner. Joshua doesn’t have any real MMA experience and the pair received widespread criticism from fans.
Diego Sanchez has ‘Mayweather, McGregor level defence’
Following the widespread criticism, Coach Joshua Fabia has responded to the fans on the Luke Thomas Show. He revealed that since he started working with Sanchez, the fighter’s defense has become Floyd Mayweather esque.
“Just like, and I’ll give you the critique on it, just like everybody talking that s**t about Diego just running at his opponent. Listen crazies, you guys are kind of like, slow it down and recognize what you’re seeing,” Fabia said on The Luke Thomas Show. “He was loaded to go through a flying knee, and in that moment, in the speed of that, he recognized it was definitely going to be unhealthy to do that. And he smothered it, had no damage, and bounced off.
“Like again, if you watch the video on Diego Sanchez’s IGTV, you will see he blocks, evades like it’s Mayweather level. It’s McGregor level. Clearly, why even McGregor, the only one with enough fight IQ to see the power in what was really happening there. Also, the only person to study movement outside of the box of ‘MMA I know everything established community. This is what is going on here man.” (H/T – BJPenn.com)
