Former UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz made his Octagon return after a 40-month layoff. He fought reigning UFC bantamweight champion Henry Cejudo in the co-main event of UFC 249.

In this fight, Cruz was getting beaten to the punch in the opening round and Henry doubled down with his kicks. With 15-seconds left on the clock in the second round, Cejudo landed a knee and then unloaded on Cruz with a barrage of punches. With just 2-seconds remaining on the clock, referee Keith Peterson stepped in to stop the fight.

Cruz was upset with the stoppage and said that he was getting up on his feet when Keith Peterson intervened. While Cruz admitted that he was hurt by the knee, he stated that he was getting up and the stoppage was  “too early”. He also called out Peterson and said that “The guy smelled like alcohol and cigarettes, so who knows what he was doing,”.

Dominick Cruz accuses referee Keith Peterson of smelling of booze and cigarettes

Cruz opened up about his loss in a recent interview with ESPN’s Ariel Helwani. He accused the referee Keith Peterson of smelling of booze and cigarettes while refereeing the fight.

I was working my way back up to my feet and on to the fence and you’re going to take some shot in that position and it’s just the name of the game,” Cruz said.

Before I went out to that fight, I specifically remember looking at this referee and he is mumbling and he won’t look me in the eyes and I am going underneath to make sure he looks at me in the eye. I am like ‘Hey man, I can’t understand what you’re saying to me, what are you talking about…Be clear because you’re in control of this fight and I want to know what’s going on. I need you to make this work and I shook his hand and said I need you to let me go out because this is a title fight and I don’t want you to be stopping the fight early,” he added.

My experience with him was smelling like he had been out all night…like cigarette and alcohols and he couldn’t make eye contact. I have never in my 25-fight had a referee that couldn’t make eye contact,” Cruz concluded.
