UFC News: Justin Gaethje to Conor McGregor: Beat me to get to Khabib!

Top UFC lightweight Justin Gaethje has been gunning for a fight against Conor McGregor for quite some time now. Gathje has been calling out McGregor since before his fight against Donald Cerrone was announced.

After McGregor knocked out Cerrone, UFC president Dana White on numerous occasions has said that he wants to make Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Conor McGregor next, given Khabib beats Tony in April.

This angered Gaethje who should be the rightful contender to fight for the title next. Gaethje is coming off of three first-round TKO wins. He has beaten Donald Cerrone, Edson Barboza and James Vick in his last three fights.

However, even if Gaethje was to fight Nurmagomedov next, he would have to wait for couple of more months as Khabib takes a month off of training to observe Ramadan. This means both Gaethje and Conor McGregor would be out of the Octagon for a long time.

Gaethje has proposed a plan where he fights McGregor and the winner ultimately gets a shot at the title again.

I think I have to look at the big picture whenever I think about it,” Gaethje told MMA Fighting in a recent interview. “I think me waiting to fight the winner of Khabib-Tony isn’t realistic. I think I will have to fight again.

I think me and Conor need to fight each other to figure out the No. 1 contender. Outside of that, if I need to fight someone else to assure myself of the No. 1 contender’s spot and get the winner of that fight, I’ll do that. As long as that’s a sure thing.”

He knows that if he fights me and beats me, nobody — Khabib [Nurmagomedov], Ali [Abdelaziz], whoever — can’t say much about him earning it or deserving the title shot. But until then, he ain’t going to get it.” (H/T – MMAFighting)
