Last week, Dana White cancelled UFC 249 along with other UFC events because of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. After Khabib Nurmagomedov pulled out of the fight a few weeks ago, Dana White said that Justin Gaethje would be the replacement opponent for Tony Ferguson.
Dana White had booked the Tachi Palace Casino Resort in Lemoore, California for two months to host UFC 249 and other domestic fights. However, all of that didn’t work out after White was told by top executives at ESPN and Disney to stand down.
With the fight cancelled, Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Tony Ferguson is still on. Now the UFC lightweight champion has given a timeline of his Octagon return. Khabib took to Instagram to announce that we would like to return to the Octagon in September.
“But September is not so far away, although it’s hard to believe that everything will end by September, but still one serious person said that in peacetime it is necessary to prepare for war – How are your days going?” – Khabib wrote.
Cancellation of Ferguson vs Nurmagomedov was nobody’s fault: Dana White
Earlier this month, Dana White stressed that Khabib Nurmagomedov shouldn’t be blamed for pulling out of the fight. With UFC 249 cancelled, its now visibly clear that he wasn’t in the wrong as the outbreak had consumed nearly the whole planet.
“Everybody knows that the Khabib fight fell off….but the reality is that it is nobody’s fault,” White said.
“Every day, when I got up, the rules changed…things were shutting down, things were closing down. Many people thought that this would be impossible for us to pull off, but I am in the mindset that nothing is impossible…we will get this figured out, when there is a will there is a way.
“He got caught up in Russia and it was a total mishap and we all made mistakes and nobody is to blame for that. The fact that we can pull off an event right now…this is by far the hardest thing I have ever done.
Who do you guys think wins in a fight between Ferguson and Nurmagomedov? Will the fight take place in September?
