While UFC has had to cancel the next three-fight card because of Coronavirus pandemic, company president Dana White is still confident that Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Tony Ferguson will go ahead as intended.
After downplaying the pandemics for days, Dana White has said that March 21, March 28 and April 11 cards have been cancelled. March 11 card (UFC Fight Night 171) was scheduled to take place at the O2 Arena in London.
UFC on ESPN 8 card scheduled for March 28 card was moved from Colombus, Ohio to UFC Apex Center. The fight was supposed to be headlined by Francis Ngannou and Jairzinho Rozenstruik. UFC Fight Night 172, which was supposed to be headlined by Alistair Overeem and Walt Harris on April 11 has also been cancelled.
Earlier today Dana White made it clear that UFC 249 may not take place in the United States, but fans will definitely be able to see it.
“Tony Ferguson vs. Khabib on April 18 is still on and that will still happen,” White said
“We’re going to follow these guidelines not to have more than 10 people in a room, and we’re hoping this all clears up by April,” White added. “This fight’s going to happen. No crowd — whatever it takes. [It’s] probably not even going to be in the United States but this fight’s going to happen.”
Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov on the venue for Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Tony Ferguson
UFC lightweight champion’s father Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov is also confident that the fight will go ahead. In an interview with RBC sports, he said that Dubai is the most likely venue for UFC 249 fight.
“Most likely it will be Dubai,” Abdulmanap said of UFC 249 (via MMA Fighting). “Firstly, it’s easier to fight diseases because of the heat. And I think the Emirates will pay for the UFC fight faster and easier.
“Abu Dhabi may well be, but then, [that’s up to] Dana White. I can’t approve, but there are more chances there.’
UFC has previously booked the fight four times and the fight didn’t go through either time. Now there’s a real chance that the fight may not happen for the fifth time as well.
