UFC News: Real reason why Khabib specifically targeted Dillon Danis when he vaulted the cage at UFC 229

UFC 229 was the highest-grossing fight card for the UFC. In this fight, Khabib Nurmagomedov successfully defended his lightweight title by submitting Conor McGregor in the fourth round.

This was a very dominant win for Khabib and this shot him to stardom making him one of the most popular athletes on the planet. However, despite the amount of money generated at UFC 229, fans and UFC management would definitely like to forget the series of incidents that transpired after the fight.

Following his win, Khabib Nurmgomedov jumped over the cage and jumped towards at Dillon Danis who was cornering Conor McGregor. Khabib Nurmagomedov revealed last year as to why he jumped cage and only aimed at Dillon Danis and not others. Contrary what many people said regarding Dillon throwing insults at ‘The Eagle’, it’s simply not true.

No, I didn’t hear him, you know,” Nurmagomedov told Submission Radio last year regarding if he heard Dillon insulting him. “I didn’t hear him, it was too loud.”

I jumped on him because other corner is too old; because Conor’s other corner, other coaches, too old, and that’s why I jumped on him,” said Nurmagomedov (transcribed by MMA Fighting). “Because he’s almost like my age.”

If I jumped on [coach John] Kavanagh, I don’t think it’s too — cause Kavanagh can’t fight me. That’s why I jumped on [Danis].”

Javier Mendez confirms Khabib Nurmagomedov’s statement

Javier Mendez reveals in an interview with Shaheen Al-Shatti of The Athletic regarding the age hierarchy factor in Dagestani culture. Shaheen writes in his article that the Dagestani culture deeply values and espouses the ideals of masculinity and respect.

Mendez narrated an incident that took place in Dagestan where Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov beat up Khabib because the young ‘Eagle’ beat up an older guy.

And one situation, I’ll tell you what happened is, Khabib — I don’t know if it was Khabib or one of his guys, I think it was Khabib, I could be wrong on this though — he went and had a fight with somebody else that was older. And Khabib beat him up. Well, his father found out and beat Khabib up, because you beat up an older guy. You beat up an older guy, you can’t do that. It’s disrespectful.

That’s why when Khabib jumped the cage (at UFC 229), he went after (Conor McGregor teammate) Dillon (Danis). He didn’t go after anybody else, because Dillon was the young one. You can’t attack an older man. You can’t. That’s disrespectful for them. It’s an age hierarchy.” (H/T – The Athletic)
