A mouth-watering match-up between top bantamweights Aljamain Sterling and Cory Sandhagen has been finalized for UFC San Diego. The fight takes place on May 16.

The news was first confirmed by Aaron Bronsteter of TSN.

Initially, Cory Sandhagen was rumored to fight Dominick Cruz on this date. But the former bantamweight champion didn’t accept the offer to fight Sandhagen.

This is a relieving moment for Sandhagen that he finally has a fight. He was supposed to fight in January at UFC Raleigh against Frankie Edgar, but the former lightweight champion opted in for a short notice fight against the Korean Zombie.

What I know to be true is that (Cruz) asked to fight in San Diego, I’ve been asking for a fight from any of those guys ahead of me, (Petr) Yan, (Marlon) Moraes or Aljamain (Sterling),” Sandhagen said last week.

Then I heard that Cruz was looking for a fight and I thought perfect, I wanted to get something in May at the latest. I think the UFC was on board with doing that fight and then, from what I understand, Cruz asked to also be on that San Diego card and then changed his mind and didn’t want to fight on the card. You can interpret that however you want, but that’s the information that I got.”

Cory Sandhagen is currently riding on a seven-fight winning streak and he defeated Raphael Assuncao in his last fight.

On the other hand, Sterling is coming off of a unanimous decision victory over Pedro Munhoz and is currently riding on a four-fight winning streak. He has defeated the likes of Jimmie Rivera, Cody Stamann, Brett Johns prior to beating Munhoz.
