UFC on ESPN: Brunson vs. Holland - Brunson

UFC Middleweight Derek Brunson has accepted the challenge to fight Kevin Holland who had previously called out Brunson and said he has a very awkward fighting style.

Derek Brunson Knock Out Lyoto Machida

Kevin Holland picked up his fifth win of 2020 last Saturday night (Dec. 12, 2020) after knocking out Ronaldo Souza in the very first of their UFC 256 Middleweight scrap inside UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Kevin Holland is currently one of the hottest names at 185 lbs. after knocking out Ronaldo Souza with a punch from his back last weekend at UFC 256 to secure his fifth straight win in 2020. Holland did his best to call out Khamzat Chimaev, but as the bout appears unlikely to materialize, “Trail Blazer” did the next best thing by recently talking some trash to Derek Brunson and his “awkward” striking.

“I want to beat Derek Brunson because I don’t like the way he strikes. It just looks awkward,” said Holland in a recent interview with Ariel Helwani. “It’s like a disrespect to striking. Sadly, he’s knocked out strikers before that weird striking.”

Derek who has seven knockouts in his UFC career can also be an overly-aggressive striker at times. And while that is not necessarily a bad thing it has gotten him in trouble a few times in his career. Brunson had been looking for someone ranked in the top-10 to fight ever since finishing Shahbazyan back in August, but so far the rest of the division has been all booked up or fighters are not currently available to fight.

One fighter that everyone knows is available to fight 24/7 is Holland. After fighting five times in 2020, Holland wants to set a modern-day UFC record and fight six times in 2021. Derek could be one of his six fights should he reach his goal of moving up the stacked middleweight division ladder.

While Derek cannot claim to have quite as much momentum as his opponent, the No.7-ranked Middleweight has won his last three bouts, including a significant main event upset over Edmen Shahbazyan. Brunson seems to have finally figured out his balance between power and technique, and he’s reaching new heights as a result.

A fight between Derek Brunson and Kevin Holland is ideal for both of them as it will clear their paths for the belt and put them on notice of everyone on the roster.
