UFC seems to be finally rewarding the ever so underappreciated lightweights in #11 ranked lightweight James ‘the Texecutioner’ Vick and #14 ranked Paul ‘the Irish dragon’ Felder with a main event they deserve.
Competing in probably the most acked division of the UFC, the climb towards the top was not easy for either one of these two lightweights. Felder (15-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC) made his debut back in October 2014 and Vick (13-1 MMA, 9-1 UFC) first fought in the organization back in September 2011. It took all these 3-4 years of dedicated work for these fighters to finally find themselves at this position.
Felder took on Instagram to give a subtle suggestion that he the UFC might have offered him a main event slot against James Vick. The post features an image of ‘Vicks’ cough drop and the hashtag ‘#mainevent’ below. (via Instagram):
Felder is riding a three fight winning streak against Alessandro Ricci, lightweight staple Stevie Ray and UFC veteran Charles Oliveira. Interestingly, this is also a three fight finish streak all with elbows or as the fans call it ‘hell-bows’. Felder would like to add Vick’s name to the list. Felder was scheduled to fight Al Iaquinta to kick off the main card of UFC 223. However, when Iaquinta was called to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov as a last minute replacement, Felder was left without a fight. Former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis was without a fight as well, due to his opponent Michael Chiesa being pulled out due an injury he sustained from McGregor’s bus chaos. However, both refused to fight each other due to them being teammates.
Vick on the other hand is on a four fight win streak after a minor setback against Beneil Dariush. He last fought Francisco Trinaldo in Austin in February. Vick showed desire to headline that card, being his backyard, however that was not materialized.
Both the fighters both like to make a statement and continue their climb to the title.
